If you are happy with your overall line through the course but you’re just looking for a more aggressive turn, a few small tweaks to your fin setup can produce great results. Remember: Make only small adjustments, a few thousandths of an inch at a time.

Heelside (onside)

Less depth: More slide at the finish of the turn.
Fin forward: Sharper, tighter turn radius.

Toeside (offside)

Fin back: More slide at finish of the turn.

How To Turn Like A Pro

will-asher

In this water ski how to, Will Asher, Jodi Fisher and Cale Burdick share their secrets to the perfect turn.

Will Asher

I concentrate on really feeling the rope all the way to the buoy. From here, I just drop my shoulder and try to get back on the line as early as possible to take the hit. You’re going to want to keep your legs soft as well, because you are likely to have a ton of angle after that kind of turn.

Jodi Fisher

Because I’ve built my career around making turns like this when needed, much of it is instinct. But, if I am late and really need a big turn, I try to stay on the handle almost all the way to the buoy. I really do not want to be off the handle very long when I am in trouble. Then, I just try to stay as strong through my core as I can. This will keep me balanced on my ski and ready to absorb the hit.

Cale Burdick

When I’m running late and need a huge turn, I aggressively shift my weight over my front foot, forcing more of the ski into the water. The more ski in the water, the harder the turn. I keep my hips low, thinking of sitting on top of the buoy as I come through the turn.

3 Keys To Marcus Brown’s Angle Of Attack

3 things you can learn from Marcus Brown's approach into the buoy.

Marcus Brown

In this water ski how to, Marcus Brown breaks down his approach into the buoy, sharing three secrets to a smooth turn.

1. Notice how the spray caused by my new turning edge isn’t evident until I’m outside the whitewash. This is where the turning edge is finally engaged — far later than most people think. The path is a smooth, progressive “J” with no sharp corners or flat spots.

2. My head is aimed down-course, and my shoulders are level. This enables me to be stacked/balanced with my body countered and falling progressively to the inside of the J-carve.

3. This is proof I’m free enough from the boat but with a taught line to make my move back toward the wake, core first, followed by my knees and ski.

How To Sponsor A Pro Water Ski Event

global-invitational

1. It takes the support of an unreal company. I’ve been in sales and marketing at Global Marine Insurance for two years now. I feel so fortunate to work for a company that allowed me to take the reigns and invest a ton of time and energy into an event like the Global Invitational. Last year’s event was something we were all very proud of, and this summer’s version is going to be even better.

2. It isn’t just about the money. It has never been my nature to just simply write a check and let things fall as they may. I want to make sure the Global Invitational is the complete package. I want to take the steps necessary to ensure the skiers are well taken care of and the fans have a seamless show in front of them.

3. Success lies in the details. It really is the small things that make an event such as this a success. Some are easily within our control, and others simply are not. I try to look at the whole picture and pay attention to the small details that we are able to take care of. But, unfortunately, it’s the big things, like the weather, that can deem a ski event successful or not.

4. We are hoping to make a big-picture impact. Skiing is a great sport with serious potential for mass appeal, but there has been a lack of cooperation as of late. The different promotional arms and governing bodies have been too splintered in the past. Everyone needs to work together, and we are hoping to lead by example.

By Jim Stanley, Global Marine Insurance

The second-annual Global Invitational water skiing and wakeboarding tournament will take place at Placid Waters in Allendale, Michigan, on June 26. For more info, go to globalinvitational.com.
